Pilates is known for improving posture, joint mobility, and core stability. But now experts believe that Pilates can boost immunity and fight the common cold and flu.


ピラティスは、姿勢が良くなる、関節が動くようになる、体幹が鍛えられる、ということでよく知られています。しかし昨今は、ピラティスをすることで自然治癒力を発達させ、風邪やインフルエンザなどの予防にも役立つと言う専門家もいます。


Pilates exercises also help to make your lymphatic and respiratory systems more efficient and these are crucial to your immune system. This is what Lynne Robinson, author of Pilates For Life has to say:


‘Our lymphatic system is basically our body’s waste disposal system. During normal metabolic processes, cells produce waste products, which need to be removed so that the cells can stay healthy and nutrients can reach the cells. Lymph is the fluid that contains the toxins, so lymph has to be removed and cleaned. Toxins are filtered out by lymph nodes situated all around the body (mostly by our joints). The lymph is then carried by vessels back to the thoracic ducts (just by the collarbones), where the cleaned lymph is returned to the bloodstream.


Although it has millions of vessels just like the blood system, the lymphatic system has no strong pump to keep lymph moving. Instead, lymph is moved by breathing, walking, intestinal activity, and muscle action. So the rhythmic movements of a Pilates session stimulate blood flow and lymph flow. Throughout your Pilates class, as your muscles contract and release, lymph vessels are squeezed and lymph is pushed along and filtered through lymph nodes on its way back to the veins and the heart.’


Is this starting to make sense? Here's another great story.


The health conditions in the internment camps during the World War were not great. Joseph Pilates insisted that everyone in his cell block participate in daily exercise routines to help maintain both their physical and mental well-being. However, some of the injured German soldiers were too weak to get out of bed. Not content to leave his comrades lying idle, Pilates took springs from the beds and attached them to the headboards and footboards of the iron bed frames, turning them into equipment that provided a type of resistance exercise for his bedridden "patients."


These mechanized beds were the forerunners of the spring-based exercise machines, like the Reformer we have at My Body My Pilates. Pilates legend has it that during the great flu epidemic of 1918, not a single one of the soldiers under Joseph Pilates' care died. He credited his technique (which he called "Contrology" or what we refer to as "Pilates" today) for the prisoners' strength and fitness — remarkable under the less than optimum living conditions of internment camps, which were hit especially hard by this deadly flu.
